DC-3/C-47 "SKYTRAIN"
Designed and built for commercial airline use in the 1930's, the DC-3 is given most of the credit for an almost 600% increase in airline passenger traffic between 1936 and 1941. recognizing its great potential as a military transport, the United States Army re-designated the aircraft as the C-47 "Skytrain" at the start of World War II, where it performed transport and paratrooper roles from Normandy to Burma. More than 13,000 DC-3's were built, with approximately 300 variants still flying in 2005.
